Cape Cod House Plans

Regarding scale and proportion, these homes range from plain square or rectangular structures to massive abodes. Cape Cod-style homes were built throughout New England into the mid-1800s, when Victorian houses eclipsed them in popularity. But in the first few decades of the 20th century, the United States as a whole saw a revival of colonial-era architecture, including the classic Cape Cod cottage. As Peter points out, "Americans, swept by a renewed fascination with their country's past, were drawn to the architectural traditions of early settlers." The rectangular interior could be divided or not, with a large central chimney linked to a fireplace in each room. No doubt the first homes would have been one room, then two rooms — a master bedroom and a living area.

“To me, that means that the old-timers were happy to call that smallest building a proper home,” she says. If you are lucky enough to live in an area with a lot Cape Cod homes, and are thinking of downsizing, consider one of these as your next home. "The Cape Cod style home is one of my favorites because of its human scale," says Lisa Hassler of Historic Homes Cape Cod / Kinlin Grover Real Estate in Cape Cod, MA. "It sits low to the ground, hunkering down against the winds, providing a warm, safe harbor."Indeed, while the rest of the country is throwing large sums of money at their heating bills, Cape owners sit back and relax. With just one-and-a-half stories, a Cape is a perfectly manageable size, offering little-to-no wasted space. Developers and architects anticipated a building boom after World War II.

While Cape Cod house style is typically synonymous with American architecture, it actually dates back to the Puritan colonists back in the 17th century. When early settlers came to the United States, they decided to model their new abodes after their half-timbered homes from England — with a few upgrades to suit their new surroundings. Though Cape Cod houses had humble beginnings, they’ve evolved into coveted, beloved structures.

White paint and black shutters was a popular pairing during the Cape Cod revival. However, you can always reinvigorate your façade with a different combination. A fresh coat of paint has the power to make or break a space, but don’t worry; when it comes to Cape Cod houses, it’s perfectly fine to keep your color palette simple. Before you dive into all of the nuances and rich history surrounding Cape Cod house style, it’s important to understand how it is defined. Many Cape Cod–style homes include decks or porches to make outdoor living more accessible. Both are very popular architectural styles, it just depends on your individual taste and what you prefer for your luxury home.

Likewise, just because a house is in Cape Cod, that doesn’t necessarily mean it falls within the style. Generally, any home that makes use of the architectural elements outlined above could be called a Cape Cod house. Still, these homes are most often found throughout the New England coast including areas like Cape Cod; Martha’s Vineyard; Nantucket; Watch Hill, Rhode Island; or even the Hamptons in New York. Who could have thought that a simple, rectangular house can capture the attention of the South, East Coast and even the rest of the country’s population?

The smaller size can be a positive attribute for Cape Cod homes, making them affordable, practical, and efficient – yet cozy and charming. There’s less space to clean, heat, maintain, or furnish, and many rooms are multi-functional, with built-in shelving and storage features. The exterior commonly features a smaller yard, which means less mowing and shoveling. The steep roofs also prevent heavy snow from accumulating over the winter. Overall, the Cape Cod-style house is an excellent choice for homebuyers searching for a modestly sized home, whether as a starter home or when it’s time to downsize. Colonial homes are historically considered an offshoot of the original Cape Cod homes and are usually bigger.

Plan: #106-1315

The history of Cape Cod architecture continued as the original wave of houses in this style was built from 1690 to 1850. The second wave, Cape Cod Revival, was built from the 1920s to the 1950s and helped popularize the style, spreading across the United States. Cape Cod interiors have furniture with clean, traditional lines, simple, minimalist shapes, and a timeless cottage charm.

Dating back to New England during the 17th century, this classic style proves that keeping it simple is anything but boring. In fact, it’s not too hard to see how Cape Cod homes have deftly surpassed the test of time. The style of picturesque summer homes has remained popular for the connection to warm months and seaside escapes.

About the American Cape Cod Style House

Reverend Timothy Dwight, a president of Yale University in Connecticut, recognized these houses as he traveled throughout the Massachusetts coastline, where Cape Cod juts out into the Atlantic Ocean. In an 1800 book describing his travels, Dwight is credited with coining the term "Cape Cod" to describe this prolific class or type of colonial architecture. Admired for its simple, timeless, clean-lined rectangular silhouette, steep roof, and central door, a Cape Cod house is likely what a child would draw if you asked them to draw a house. Homey and effortlessly appealing, the Cape Cod house style is the definition of cookie-cutter comfort-food architecture that has stood the test of time.

Cape Cod architecture is one of the most instantly recognizable home styles in the United States. At its core, an original Cape Cod house is a small, rectangular, unadorned one to one-and-a-half-story cottage with side gables and a steeply pitched roof to keep snow from piling up. This style was quite rare as it was exclusively reserved for the wealthy. The double cape features a front door in the central part of the house with two symmetrically placed multi-paned windows on either side. There is also a huge chimney and a steep roof as the defining characteristics of a full cape.

Contemporary homes, on the other hand, can be more minimalistic, often utilizing a mix of materials for the exterior. You’ll typically find a centered front entry and windows which feature trimming and painted shutters. The roofs were constructed steep and tall, to easily shed rain and snow. This Cape Cod house has undergone some changes over time, but it remains a reminder of classic Americana, beloved for its charm, warmth, nostalgia, and practicality.

They are typically built with side-gabled roofs, which feature sloped sides along the front and back and pitched triangular areas on either side of the house. This stripped-down roofline distinguishes them from the cornucopia of roof angles and details often found in Victorian homes. Remembering that the original colonists of the New World took the journey because of freedom of religion, we should not be surprised at the Puritan-stark nature of America's first homes. The home had to function in the heat of summer and bone-chilling New England winters. Though Cape Cod cottages may, at times, come with the connotation of old money or coastal elite homeowners, they didn’t start like this. “The first settlers came from Plymouth and were just trying to survive,” McDonald explains.

They offer practical drainage and height for the half-story typically included in a Cape Cod home. The origins of Cape Cod houses date back to the 1600s when the first Puritan settlers arrived in America. The humble architecture is similar to an English cottage, but a few features were adapted to withstand the harsh New England climate better. The steeply pitched roofs, for example, are designed to allow heavy snow to slide off more easily in the winter. A 3/4 Cape or three-quarter Cape refers to the positioning of the door and windows on the layout of a Cape Cod house plan.

The names we attach to our residential architecture is telling of the times. People who live in small Cape Cod styles homes will rarely use the word "cottage" to describe where they live. Cape Cod architecture is one of American architecture's most popular and easily recognizable styles.

'It’s also flexible in how it can be configured and beautiful for all of those reasons. According to Barry Goralnick, a New York-based designer who grew up surrounded by Cape Cod houses in Massachusetts, these smaller iterations have their perks. Despite having a timeless style, Capes have evolved over the years to a few different subcategories, says My Move. Originating in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, in the 17th CE, these houses are a stereotype for the perfect American Cottage that you have envisioned.

Plan: #196-1183

Or maybe you’re considering building elsewhere but crave quintessential New England charm? The typical Cape Cod house plan is modest in size, rectangular, symmetrical and accommodating to a variety of interior layouts. If you’re going to build a home you plan to stay in for the rest of your life, consider selecting a Cape Cod house plan that features the master suite on the main level, as this will make aging in place far easier. Windows play a big factor in creating the charm and efficiency of Cape Cod house plans. The rest of a Cape Cod style house’s exterior is pretty minimal in terms of ornamentation and usually boasts clapboard siding or wood shingles.

Defining elements and characteristics of a Cape Cod house

cape cod house

Upon a closer look, in addition to a shed-like front door shelter, rain and snow can be redirected away from the house by gutters and downspouts and window lintels. For the practical New Englander, architectural detail is often for very practical reasons. Though Cape Cod homes are known and loved for their simplicity, they were ultimately designed for colder, snowier climates — right down to their steep roofs.

How to find Cape Cod-style houses for sale in your area

From the bespoke versions put up by modern reproduction firms to custom builders throughout the region,  the style survives and thrives, sometimes in the most contemporary ways. ZeroEnergy Design, also in Boston, specializes in cutting-edge energy-efficient homes, often achieving net-zero buildings (making as much energy as they consume). Certainly, Cape Cods lend themselves to coastal elements inside, but they're just as easy to decorate in an eclectic, new traditional, or Scandi-inspired style. With a look that's both historic and understated, it's easy to find a design aesthetic that will be harmonious with a Cape Cod cottage. Though this historic style originated as far back as the late 17th century, it has experienced resurgences in popularity many times since then. While Cape Cods first started sprouting up in Massachusetts, they were common in most of New England by 1740.

Colonial Revival (1930s–1950s)

To get an accurate idea of how much the Cape Cod home of your dreams may cost, America's Best House Plans offers a Cost to Build Estimator. According to Home Edit, many Capes feature wood trim, but in more modern takes, it's bright white to contrast any other timeless pieces in the home. The outlet also notes that natural materials are the best to decorate with in Cape Cod homes, since it highlights those wood elements and brings the build back to its early roots. Unzipping through the interiors, hardwood flooring is a must specification in the Cape Cod homes. While choosing a color palette, it is always a smart move to go for a chic, subtle design shade that lets the light bounce away while making enough room for you to relax.

The modern day Cape Cod houses you see in nearly every part of North America are modeled after the rugged architecture of colonial New England. In the 1930s, the Depression and Colonial Revival combined to make Cape Cod-style homes regain popularity as an economical building style. In the 1940s and 1950s, Cape Cod homes were a widespread answer to the post-war housing boom. Even in supersized 21st-century America, Cape Cod-style homes retain a nostalgic popular appeal with new builds of all sizes, from sprawling homes to tiny houses inspired by the original Cape Cod architectural style. Traditionally, the space under the roof of a Cape Cod house wasn't used as a livable second story.

Cape Cod House Plans, Floor Plans & Designs

Cape Cod homes have an unfinished or partially opened crawl space underneath the house, more commonly lined with stone, brick or brick veneer, as specified. Adding nooks and cranny for storage purposes can really add a serious charm to the house. Meanwhile, in the interiors, the low-heightened ceilings and bold shutters account for heat conservation and blocking of harsh winter winds.

House Features

These homes were built to help house families and veterans returning from war. Like many of the style's other characteristics, Cape Cod homes typically feature neutral exterior color schemes. The original shake shingles are often left to weather gray, while other Cape Cod homes sport painted shingles. Most of the color schemes, like those of Colonial-style homes, are very neutral and austere. Patterned brickwork, diamond-paned windows, and a slate roof can give a 20th century Cape Cod the flavor of a Tudor Cottage home. At first glance, you might not think of this house as a Cape Cod—especially because of the brick exterior.

It's also common for many modern Cape Cods to have an attached or detached garage, front walkway, and back patio or porch. A Cape Cod-style house with an open-floor plan eliminates most non-structural walls to create an open and airy flow through the kitchen, dining area, and living room. If the homeowner chooses to add a wing or two and still retain the Cape Cod structure, they can extend a single-story off one or both sides of the home. Occasionally, such extensions may not be possible on a narrow lot, and the home can only be built up to add more living space. In keeping with a more traditional style, you can find floor plans with the front entry or foyer that opens onto a stairway, with a bedroom, study, or office on the right side and a formal living room on the left.

Modern Cape Cod interior design opts for a white color palette to add light to the home and create a larger feel in the space. Unlike Victorian homes popular in the early 20th century, Cape Cod homes are distinguished by their simple architectural designs. Because of their modest geometric forms, Cape Cod houses are particularly well-suited for additions. This Cape Cod home seems very traditional—no dormers, a center chimney, and not even any window shutters.

The Reverend Timothy Dwight IV (1752–1817), president of Yale University from 1795 to 1817, coined the term "Cape Cod house" after a visit to the Cape in 1800. Early Capes used wainscoting on the interior walls to prevent moisture from building up during humid Cape Cod summers. The living area is on the main floor, which consists of a living room, dining room, kitchen, and an optional bedroom. The homes are typically 1 or 1 1/2 stories, usually featuring low ceilings, although modern Capes have increased the ceiling height. Today, these homes can range from a traditional 3+2 to a luxury Cape Cod house with all the modern amenities. Wills did away with the functional interior and renovated it for 20th-century life while keeping the exterior features home buyers love, even today.

The half-Cape has a single, off-center door with two windows to one side. The layout usually centers around a large central fireplace and the common room or kitchen, with the bedrooms, pantries, parlor, and rear entry branched off the central kitchen. The style fell out of popularity temporarily but had a resurgence post World War ll, known as the Cape Cod Revival.

They feature similar rectangular floor plans, though they often include at least two stories. Aside from the square footage, colonial homes typically employ gambrel roofs—a main feature of Dutch colonials—while Cape Cod houses traditionally make use of gable roofs. Colonial houses may also include more ornamentation, like the use of columns, which is less common on traditional Cape Cod homes.

Traditionally, Cape Cod floor plans are symmetrical, with an equal number of windows on either side of the door. A three-quarter Cape has two windows on one side of the door and a single window on the other side of the door. Quite often, along with a full second-story expansion, today's Cape Cod homes will also feature a bonus space of some type, thereby increasing the square footage and flexibility of the house to suit the modern family. Additionally, the updated Cape Cod plans may have adopted the open floor plan layout to improve the traffic flow, livability, and efficiency of the home's interior. The exterior steep roofs are symbolic of a typical cape cod house that is designed solely for the purpose of minimizing the weight of the snow.

This style has become a quintessential American home whose practicality is outweighed only by its charm. Homeowners can also create a backyard living area without interfering with the Cape Cod home’s quaint, historic charm. You can find patios and decks in many Cape Cod backyards with comfortable furniture for entertaining friends and family. Winters can get cold in New England, so a fire pit would be a nice addition to enjoy the fall and winter seasons.

While HostGator offers tools to help with SEO, email marketing, e-commerce and malware protection, they’re all add-ons that cost extra. In fact, the only thing you get that’s considered “extra” is the ability to add a blog to your site. HostGator’s templates are generic but customizable, so you can change the look of your website to make it unique. In regards to the actual website builder, I’d say HostGator fashioned its app like other built-in website builders that web hosts use. Depending on which website builders you compare to Squarespace, it’s either on par with others for cost or far more expensive; I rarely find Squarespace the cheapest option.

These days, most clients will be expecting some sort of digital file for easy storage and sharing, usually an original source file from a program like Photoshop and a simple image type such as JPEG. Exaggerated, cartoony or oddball characters are not excluded here—if anything, you should make more of an effort to ground them in realistic traits that people will easily recognize. Even if you are not planning to animate the character, you will imply physicality in their pose and should understand how they move and distribute their weight. I highly recommend this magazine for anyone who loves creative art & illustration. For example there’s a chapter on “capturing a character’s essence” with stylized artist Simone Grünwald.

Unfortunately, there’s not always a straightforward way to know whether you’ve chosen the right destination. Creating art is a process of blind feeling, aesthetic judgement and trial-and-error. It is often up to the illustrator to interpret the brief, ask the right questions, read between the lines, and distill the client’s explanation into core character traits. Your ideas should not contradict the brief, of course, but keep in mind that you were hired for your expertise. That summer, the 963,000-acre Dixie fire, which started July 13, became the first to burn from one side of the Sierra Nevada to the other, followed in short order by the 221,000-acre Caldor fire. The size of the heat dome made it particularly troubling because it resulted in what the study authors called widespread synchronous burning, with many disparate areas igniting at the same time. That posed a challenge to fire agencies because they tend to ask for help from other places when they don’t have enough resources locally. The researchers also found strong links between the extreme heat and wildfire activity in 2021. That year, 21% of the land burned in North America was scorched by fires that started during and within the heat dome, with that figure rising to 34% when taking into account fires that started within 10 days, the researchers found.

It would direct the president to seek repayment from the Ukrainian government of $10 billion in economic assistance, a concept supported by former President Donald J. Trump, who had pushed for any aid to Kyiv to be in the form of a loan. But it also would allow the president to forgive those loans starting in 2026. Twenty-five Republicans voted against the fourth bill, which included measures that could lead to a ban on TikTok in the United States and that would redirect funds from seized Russian assets to help aid Ukraine.

To achieve the ideal taste texture and freshness, each batter is made from scratch every day using only the highest quality ingredients. Another signature item is the Dutch Baby, an air filled delight oven baked to golden perfection and served with lemon, whipped butter and powdered sugar to create a mouthwatering blend. Jain had previously worked with other researchers to develop a method for evaluating such extreme weather events by looking at anomalies in geopotential heights, which indicate whether there are high or low pressure systems in the upper atmosphere. High pressure systems that persist for a long time tend to correspond with heat waves and increased fire risk, he said. And climate change has contributed to a trend of rising heights, potentially magnifying these events. Still, 37 “no” votes, while a break from Washington’s ironclad support for the Jewish state, fell short of the opposition bloc progressives had hoped to muster.

More than 7.9 million acres burned in North America in July alone — at that time, the greatest area in a single month since record-keeping began, according to the study. Smoke traveled across the continent, triggering air quality alerts across much of the East Coast. The plan, laid out in a rule that passed on Friday, was concocted to capitalize on the pools of support for each part of the $95 billion package, while preventing opposition to any one piece from taking down all of them.

We may have pancakes in our name, but we’re a whole lot more than that. And all indications suggest that that future is approaching quickly. Since the study was written, Canada’s 2021 wildfire season was dwarfed by that of 2023, which saw more than 45 million acres burn. Jain now has a preprint examining how heat waves played a role. Although there was no single event as extreme as 2021’s heat dome, some regions of Canada saw many more heat events than on average, he said. It’s important to untangle climate change’s influence on extreme weather events like the heat dome, which are increasing in frequency and intensity, Diffenbaugh said.

Democrats put up a big vote — 174 — in favor of this bill, which was intended to sweeten the overall package for conservatives. While all Democrats voted in favor of aid to Ukraine and all but Ms. Tlaib supported funding to Taiwan, 37 left-leaning Democrats defected to vote against the Israel aid bill. They said before the vote that they opposed unfettered aid to Israel that could be used in its offensive in Gaza. The opposition to the Israel aid represented a minority of Democrats, but reflected the deep resistance to unconditional aid and the divisions in the party on Gaza. Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland represented a notable new “no” vote among Democrats, and other standouts included Representatives Donald S. Beyer Jr. of Virginia, Earl Blumenauer of Oregon and John Garamendi of California.

In general, it’s difficult to completely attribute a fire to any individual factor, because flames are often fueled by a complex interplay of conditions — anything from overstocked forests to wind, Abatzoglou said. Still, in 2021, California had its hottest June to July in the observational period, and researchers have established a strong relationship between warm, dry summers and area burned in the state’s forests, he said. The study did not look specifically at how the heat dome, which extended into Northern California, affected the state’s fire season.

California Republicans in swing districts backed Trump ally Jordan for speaker Los Angeles Times

jim jordan house of representatives

Republican Rep. Chip Roy of Texas, who already voted twice against McCarthy, nominated Jordan for speaker in the third round. Despite this, when then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced the creation of a select committee to investigate the events leading up and on Jan. 6, 2021, McCarthy, who was the minority leader, picked Jordan to be one of the Republicans on the committee. A controversy that has reemerged with Jordan vying for the speakership dates back to his time as a wrestling coach at The Ohio State University before he became a state legislator. Jordan lambasted the congressional and federal investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. He also sought to prevent the impeachment inquiry hearing over Trump's call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy from proceeding. In 1994 he was first elected to public office, beginning the first of his three terms in the Ohio House of Representatives.

Column: Kevin McCarthy wants vengeance. Now he’s free to pursue it

Jordan, a 59-year-old native of Troy, Ohio, has spent most of his adult life as a politician, becoming an Ohio state representative in 1995. Jordan was a founding member of the House Freedom Caucus, a group of the most conservative members of the party that was established to oust then-House Speaker John Boehner, which was ultimately successful. During former President Donald Trump's presidency, Trump found in Jordan an ally who, like Trump, rarely held back. Since Jordan joined the House in 2007, he has gained a reputation as an outspoken critic of Democratic White Houses whose flamethrowing tactics have singed Republicans as well. A hard-right conservative from Ohio, Jordan is the face of the GOP investigations into the Biden administration. Jordan served on the House committee that investigated the 2012 terrorist attack on the U.S. compound in Benghazi, Libya, where four Americans were killed, including U.S.

Here's what happened Friday in the House speaker saga — and what is expected to occur next

All the legislative body’s 212 Democrats voted for New York’s Hakeem Jeffries. There has never been a similar situation, so it’s unclear exactly what the scope of McHenry’s power is. It has been widely understood to be extremely narrow so far, limited to the authority to oversee a vote for the next speaker.

House Republicans share schedule of next steps in speaker race and election

The now-defunct House Jan. 6 committee said in its final report that Jordan was among several lawmakers who had "materially relevant communications with Donald Trump or others in the White House" who also failed to comply with the panel's subpoenas. An earlier version of this article incorrectly identified the political party of a group of representatives who notably voted “no” on new aid for Israel. Democrats have all voted for their leader, Hakeem Jeffries of New York, in each of the speakership elections.

And there has been all sorts of faux urgency about the need to elect a speaker so the House, leaderless since McCarthy’s defenestration, can get back to business. Jordan-the-bomb-thrower might ultimately win the speakership of the House. But setting aside those glaring defects, what is singularly, unequivocally disqualifying is Jordan’s attempts, at Trump’s beckoning, to subvert an election that even Trump officials called the most secure in American history. All the talk of voter fraud, ballot-stuffing and other alleged subterfuge — which Jordan has widely promoted — is pure bunk. Jordan lost the first round of voting on Tuesday and fell well short again Wednesday, thus sparing the nation, in this time of war abroad and strife at home, the calamity that could ensue if the gavel falls into his weaselly grasp.

jim jordan house of representatives

It's a tough tactic, but Jordan surrogates say it's effective and necessary. "The House needs a speaker as soon as possible. Expect another round of votes today. It's time for Republicans to come together," Dye said. Several Republicans backed the request, including Texas Rep. Kay Granger and Arkansas Rep. Steve Womack.

A number of the group's members, for example, issued threats in 2015 to oust John Boehner as speaker of the House, especially because of his bipartisan deals to fund the government and prevent shutdowns. Ultimately, Boehner voluntarily resigned from the post and from Congress that September after months of pressure and opposition from far-right lawmakers. Jordan has been a polarizing figure on Capitol Hill over the last several years, and he has come under scrutiny for his previous job as a wrestling coach.

What was Jim Jordan's role on Jan. 6, 2021?

Jordan was often animated in his defense of Trump during the president’s first impeachment trial, involving Trump’s 2019 phone call with Ukrainian Pres. During the call Trump threatened to withhold military aid to Ukraine unless Zelensky investigated the business dealings of Joe Biden’s son Hunter. Jordan also supported lawsuits to question the validity of the 2020 U.S. presidential election and refused on January 6, 2021, to certify the election’s results. He was subpoenaed to testify before the House select committee on the January 6 attack but refused to appear.

jim jordan house of representatives

Without a majority, the speaker contest is then forced into a second round of voting. "No person having received a majority of the whole number of votes cast by surname, a speaker has not been elected," McHenry said with a bang of the gavel. Speaker pro tempore Patrick McHenry, who is temporarily leading the House, declared the chamber in recess after Jordan failed to receive the requisite number of votes to be elected speaker. Apart from Calvert, Steel and others mentioned above, the California GOP lawmakers who supported Jordan on both ballots included Reps. Darrell Issa, Kevin Kiley, Young Kim, Tom McClintock, Jay Obernolte and former Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Doug LaMalfa, who voted for McCarthy on Tuesday in protest of his removal two weeks ago, backed Jordan on the second ballot. On Wednesday, California’s 12 GOP House members put tribal loyalty above the country’s best interests and heedlessly cast their votes to make Jim Jordan — election denier, Jan. 6 instigator, political pyromaniac — the next House speaker.

Jim Jordan (born February 17, 1964, Troy, Ohio, U.S.) Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Ohio, who is widely seen as one of the legislative body’s most conservative members. Jordan was first elected to Congress in 2006 and was instrumental in the founding of the House Freedom Caucus in 2015, becoming the first chair of the group of ultra-conservative House members. Jordan, a close ally of former U.S. president Donald Trump, sought to be elected speaker of the House in October 2023 after Kevin McCarthy’s historic ouster from that role. The House passed a long-stalled foreign aid package on Saturday that gives funding to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, with a majority of lawmakers backing money for American allies across the globe. The package, which now goes to the Senate, is almost certain to become law.

He also reported from the White House and Capitol Hill during the George H.W. Bush and Clinton administrations. Jordan earlier today urged voters to “rally around” McCarthy, but Raju said conservatives are “essentially ignoring it” and Good told CNN he expects votes for Jordan to grow. Republicans have told CNN’s Manu Raju that they plan on standing down on their vote for Rep. Jim Jordan, who was nominated during the second ballot.

“Anyone who endorses Jordan and any member who votes for him is affirmatively voting for a coup plotter, an election denier and a foe of American democracy,” the ad said. Jordan quickly emerged as the favorite among conservatives for the GOP's nomination for speaker, and the conference convened Friday morning to select a new candidate. The Ohio Republican faced a late challenge from Georgia Rep. Austin Scott, though ultimately won the backing of a majority of the 221-member conference.

Jordan ran to become speaker of the House in 2013 and 2015, getting two votes and one vote, respectively. He also lost to McCarthy in 2019 for the role of House minority leader by a vote of 159–43. In 2018 a sexual abuse scandal involving OSU’s athletics program led to allegations that Jordan knew of the abuse and did nothing to stop it.

But the blot won’t go away for members of California’s GOP delegation, who lashed themselves even closer Wednesday to Jordan’s sinking ship. Republican Rep. Chip Roy, who voted for Rep. Byron Donalds on the first ballot and Rep. Jim Jordan on the second, railed against McCarthy as part of the establishment. No one received enough votes to become House speaker after a historic second vote. The abuse sprang into focus decades after it happened, when former students accused physician Richard Strauss of abusing wrestlers and other athletes. An independent investigation conducted by law firm Perkins Coie on behalf of The Ohio State University and released in 2019 alleged Strauss abused at least 177 students while he was a school doctor, including at least 48 wrestlers.

Some of the California Republicans have been quiet on their voting plans. Opening statements, nominations and procedures could eat up an hour or so — Jordan and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries will be nominated, and then the voting begins. He appears to be just short but plans to barrel ahead with an afternoon vote to twist the arms of remaining holdouts with the public scrutiny of a roll call vote.

GOP Rep. Bob Good told Raju that some voters are “dead set” in their opposition to McCarthy, and plan on voting for Jordan again in the third ballot. CNN Capitol Hill reporter Melanie Zanona says to watch if any of the 19 lawmakers who voted against McCarthy in the second ballot will change their votes the third time around. Jordan, in an effort to show party unity, nominated GOP leader Kevin McCarthy in the second round of voting.

Colleagues again nominate Rep Jim Jordan to be U.S. House Speaker

jim jordan house of representatives

After Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election and Trump refused to concede while making claims of election fraud, Jordan supported lawsuits to invalidate the election results and voted not to certify the Electoral College results. Jordan was a founding member of the House Freedom Caucus in 2015, and served as its first chairman from 2015 to 2017. Led by Jordan, the conservative members of the caucus pushed for a motion to "vacate the chair" against then-Speaker John Boehner, the same move that ultimately ousted former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy from his speakership. Before any vote could take place, Boehner announced his resignation in September 2015. As the current chairman of the Judiciary Committee, Jordan has been his caucus' chief investigator of Biden and his family, running probes into both the president and his son Hunter Biden. His panel was also among the three congressional committees McCarthy tasked with opening an impeachment inquiry into the president.

Will Jim Jordan or Steve Scalise — or even Kevin McCarthy — be the next speaker of the House?.

The committee said that on Jan. 2, 2021, Jordan led a conference call in which he and other members of Congress discussed with Trump strategies to delay the joint session on Jan. 6 to certify the electoral votes solidifying Joe Biden's victory. Jordan has served in the House since 2007 and has held several leadership roles, including chairman of the House Freedom Caucus and ranking member on both the House Oversight and Judiciary committees. Twenty-five Republicans voted against the fourth bill, which included measures that could lead to a ban on TikTok in the United States and that would redirect funds from seized Russian assets to help aid Ukraine. Democrats put up a big vote — 174 — in favor of this bill, which was intended to sweeten the overall package for conservatives.

Scalise will not run for speaker again

Twenty-five Republicans opposed him in a third vote, putting him even further from the speakership. When McCarthy negotiated himself into the speakership earlier this year, one of his key concessions was allowing any House member to file a motion to vacate, or remove him from speaker. Representative Matt Gaetz, a far-right Republican from Florida, filed such a motion earlier this month and enough Republicans – eight in total – voted against McCarthy to oust him.

Hoyer: "Republicans need to work together with us to create a functional House of Representatives"

"We knew of no abuse. Never heard of abuse. If we had, we would have reported it," Jordan said in 2018 when the ex-wrestlers claimed he was aware. Two former university wrestlers, Mike DiSabato and Dunyasha Yetts, claimed Jordan was aware of allegations that a now-dead team doctor was abusing athletes. Jordan has repeatedly denied any knowledge of the abuse, and Jordan himself has never been accused of sexual misconduct.

Spartz drew headlines earlier this year when she voted “present” multiple times during the long process to elect McCarthy as Speaker. The U.S. House remained without a speaker Tuesday afternoon as about 20 Republicans, including Indiana's Victoria Spartz, voted for candidates other than GOP nominee Jim Jordan of Ohio. The United States is divided into 435 congressional districts, each with a population of about 710,000 individuals. Each district elects a representative to the House of Representatives for a two-year term. Americans in the United States’s six territories are represented in the House of Representatives by an additional six non-voting delegates. As members of Congress voted for a second time, most Republicans - including Jordan - cast ballots for McCarthy with a handful backing Jordan.

Jordan excelled as a high-school wrestler, winning the Ohio state championships four times. Jordan is a fiscal conservative who believes that families and taxpayers, rather than government, know best how to make decisions with their money. Throughout his career, Jim Jordan has led the fight against tax hikes, including those proposed by his own political party.

Duarte and Garcia’s races are considered “toss-ups,” Cook Political Report, a nonpartisan congressional watchdog, noted on Friday. Cook rates Valadao and Steel’s races as leaning Republican, and Kim’s as likely to go Republican. He built his brand on being a roaring archconservative unafraid to take on liberals. He was a pioneer of this new right-wing faction that has become the face of the Republican Party.

One might say it indicates their true loyalties, in spite of all those nice ribbon-cuttings and the “we’re here to help” images they like to portray. After Republicans ousted Kevin McCarthy as speaker, Patrick McHenry, a North Carolina Republican, became the speaker pro tempore. McCarthy chose McHenry to take on that role should the speakership ever be declared vacant. Even as it was clear that Jordan had no clear path to becoming the speaker, no Republican emerged to seriously challenge him. Republicans currently have a Sunday noon deadline to announce their candidacy ahead of another round of speakership talks.

In 2018, former wrestlers he coached at Ohio State University accused him of having failed to stop the team's doctor from molesting them and other students. Jordan, who was the university's assistant wrestling coach from 1986 to 1994, has repeatedly said he knew nothing of the abuse until former students began speaking out. WASHINGTON — Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, is the only candidate in the race for House speaker, but he's still struggling to win over enough support from rank-and-file Republicans to get elected in a formal floor vote. On Jan. 3, former Speaker Kevin McCarthy became the first candidate in the majority party to lose a bid for the House speakership in 100 years. He won the gavel in the 15th round of voting, making his election the longest since before the Civil War. On Monday night, Spartz released a statement expressing concerns about Jordan’s leadership and if the Ohio Republican would adopt what she called “intimidation” tactics used by McCarthy to gain speaker votes.

Garcia is the only one of the five Californians in question who voted against certifying some election results. Valadao has said in statements that he backed Jordan “because we need to get back to work” and that he would support a plan to empower McHenry. House Republicans have struggled to pick a leader since eight Republicans on Oct. 3 led a vote, joined by Democrats, to remove Rep. Kevin McCarthy of Bakersfield from the speaker’s chair. The new speaker will take over as Congress faces numerous crises both domestically and abroad. Funding for federal agencies extends only through Nov. 17, and lawmakers will have to act to avert a government shutdown.

If they can show they backed Jordan for practical reasons, voters may excuse their support for him. Republican voters have become more likely to hold their own party accountable for the chaos in Washington. On Sept. 11, 32% of Republicans polled said they would blame their party most ifthe government were to shut down.

Jordan said earlier that voting would continue "until we get a speaker." He and his allies had hoped to wrap up the process by the end of the day to avoid a marathon of votes like those required to elect McCarthy in January. That election took 15 rounds of voting over four days before he was finally elected. The first order of House business as the 118th Congress convenes is the selection of a new speaker, but McCarthy is being stonewalled by a group of conservative hardliners. Because the GOP holds only a narrow majority, those hardliners hold more influence in the conference and have already denied McCarthy the votes necessary to secure the gavel on initial rounds of balloting.

"The one thing that's clear is he doesn't have the votes. And so at some point as a conference we'll have to figure out who does and so I think every member is having that thought process right now," Donalds told CNN's Jake Tapper. All 19 GOP lawmakers who voted against McCarthy in the first round voted for Jordan in the second round. “Beyond the 19 or so Republicans who voted for Jim Jordan, how many will vote for him on the third ballot? House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy said he is not giving up his fight for speaker despite the fact 19 Republican members voted against him. A warning sign for Kevin McCarthy – conservative supporter Rep. Ken Buck says he believes the House GOP leader will eventually lose more backing if the voting drags out. Jordan, a two-time NCAA Division I wrestling champion and four-time state champion in high school, worked as an assistant wrestling coach from 1986 to 1994.
